Google’s Gmail app for Android is getting a significant upgrade, bringing it closer to its desktop counterpart. The latest update introduces AI-based email summaries through a feature called “Summarize this email.” Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Summarize This Email:
    • The new button appears below the email title or subject.
    • When tapped, it provides a quick synopsis of lengthy emails or long threads.
    • While the feature is still in its developmental stages for Android, it mirrors the email summarization functionality available on the web version of Gmail.
  1. Gemini Integration:
    • A dedicated Gemini button is also uncovered within the three-dot menu inside email threads.
    • Currently, tapping the button returns an empty panel, but it’s likely to provide easy access to Google’s AI chatbot and other Gemini-related actions, including email summaries.
  1. Paid Google One Plans:
    • The Summarize This Email feature may be limited to people on paid Google One plans, such as the AI Premium tier.
  1. AI-Related Changes:
    • These upgrades give us insight into the AI-related changes coming to one of Google’s most widely used services.
