Apple is developing a new tabletop device similar to an iPad that will allow users to manage smart home products, oversee household security, and engage in video calls. This device, expected to launch as early as 2026, features a thin robotic arm that can tilt and rotate a large display. It will operate on a variant of iPadOS and is designed to compete with products like Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show.

The project was approved in 2022, with intensified development following the cancellation of Apple's car initiative. Kevin Lynch, previously overseeing the car project, is now leading the tabletop device's development. Currently, hundreds of Apple employees are involved, aiming to leverage Apple Intelligence tools, with Siri and voice commands as primary controls for the device.

Despite the excitement, there are concerns within Apple about consumer interest in this product, particularly since the company already dominates the tablet market. Pricing could also affect demand, as the device is projected to cost around $1,000. This tabletop device is part of Apple's broader strategy to diversify its product offerings amidst declining iPhone sales. Other projects in development include smart glasses, AirPods with cameras, and potentially foldable iPhones and iPads.
