If you’ve just started using a new iPhone for the first time, you may encounter some irritating behavior while doing everyday tasks. One of the common annoyances lies in the power button, which, by default, ends ongoing calls if pressed (either intentionally or, more commonly, accidentally). Fortunately, on iOS 16 and the latest iOS 17, Apple offers a workaround that addresses this problem. Below are the steps you need to follow to stop the power button from abruptly ending calls on your iPhone.

Why you may want to stop the power button from ending calls
Some users appreciate the power button ending calls, as pressing the hardware button is arguably easier than tapping on the software ‘button’ on the screen. However, many other people tend to accidentally hit the power button during calls (to lock their phones, for example), which interrupts their conversations and sometimes places them in awkward situations. If you’re part of the latter group and are running iOS 16 or later, you can stop your iPhone’s power button from ending calls by following the steps we’ve listed here.
How to stop the power button from ending calls on iOS
You just have to flick a single toggle to address this problem on iOS 16 and newer versions.
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Tap on Touch under Physical and Motor.
- Scroll down and enable the Prevent Lock to End Call toggle (it should turn green).
The choice is yours
With a few easy steps, you can pick how the power button behaves during a phone call. This option is available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and also on older models as long as the device is running at least iOS 16. Please also note that enabling this toggle will also disable the ability to reject incoming calls by double-clicking the power button. So, this option doesn’t strictly revolve around ongoing calls. But if you accidentally hit the power button during calls, you could try turning off this behavior. If you change your mind or dislike how it works, you could always revert it by following the same steps.
